about
Back at the end of the last century my first band, Academy Morticians, released their classic "Shallow Permanence" album to little acclaim. On that album was a song I wrote called "Profitganda", about the propaganda we get to go to war and kill innocent people so that those in charge can profit.
I love that song, and still play it. It's referenced in "With Burning Anger", in fact. It was the first legitimately good song I wrote and Simon, my Academy Morticians co-conspirator and I even played it on my wedding day.
The other day, as I was playing it after a long day of remote teaching, I began to realise that, although a completely different problem - government handling of COVID-19 - the profits over people mentality and supporting propaganda continued to play a role here. The first lockdown ended prematurely so the economy could be kick-started; the poor less able to self-isolate or stay at home to keep themselves and their families safe. Those who are the lowest paid in our society are those less likely to be able to work from home, and so, forced to earn a living, they put themselves - and everyone else - in danger because they simply couldn't afford to stay safe. All of which could have been avoided if the government had prioritised safety for all instead of safety for some, and protecting all citizens instead of protecting the economy. A universal basic income, for example, would have taken the worry out of people unable to work or self isolate and enabled us all to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.
So I started re-working Profitganda for the coronavirus era. Some of the lyrics came to me in the middle of the night as I lay awake with insomnia. The rest came the next day, when it turned out Academy Morticians' drummer, Steve, had sent me a message also linking Profitganda to the handling of COVID.
So here is a new variant of a song I wrote when I was fifteen, updated nearly a quarter of a century later, following my own battle with COVID-19 over Christmas (I still don't have my full sense of taste and smell back!) For fans of Academy Morticians and Strangely Shaped By Fathers alike (and for all haters of government - "the bastards who won't stop it"). Enjoy!
lyrics
I’ve been told to go to work and that it’s not a threat
By the propaganda spewed by business and government
We must do our jobs but not ask the reasons why
To keep our masters rich so many might have to die?
Essential work must still be done
so society can run
Inessential work, meanwhile,
exposes exploitation’s smile
We were told two metres –
then just one inside a shop
Consume just as you did before,
until you start to cough…
Think twice about the information you’re fed
Whose interests is it in?
It’s profits over people in the modern age
Do you think they care if you die?
It’s their money they want – not you – the money not you
Are we being told the full story?
What’s being kept out and what’s being put in?
The state controls the information and they want you back at work
If you believe everything you read you’re likely to get hurt
We’ll just tell them it’s safe now,
But we can’t quite explain how
Take your masks off to eat out,
but it’s not you who it helps out
We were told to stay at home
but not how we’d pay the bills
Forced the poor out into harm’s way
so their friends’ pockets could be filled
Refused to learn from the past
Put us at risk to do pointless tasks
Eased the lockdown too fast
Encouraged not wearing masks
But...When you read more than the press briefings say
And listen to scientists
The evidence just overwhelms
How badly our government fucked this
Think twice about the information you’re fed
Whose interests is it in?
It’s profits over people in the modern age
Do you think they care if you die?
It’s their money they want – not you – the money not you
I won’t die to increase your wealth

All lyrics and music by DaN McKee - except all those guitar and harmony bits I copied from Simon Mastrantone on the original recording that he came up with.
Strangely Shaped By Fathers is Academy Morticians/Bullet of Diplomacy bassist & anarchist atheist punk rock teacher, DaN
McKee, working solo with Logic Pro, GarageBand and a rudimentary understanding of how to play guitar and programme some drums alongside his bass playing. It's a one person punk "band" that mixes the personal and political. Enjoy!...more
Again - all of The Shell Corporation's stuff is fantastic, but this album is my favourite and one never far from any playlist I'm putting together. Strangely Shaped By Fathers
I was introduced to these guys by Rich from Ignite Records here in Birmingham and have loved everything they've done. But. again, for me, this was the first thing I heard and a favourite ever since. Strangely Shaped By Fathers
